Javits convention center commonly known as the javits center is a large convention center located on eleventh avenue between 34th and 40th streets in hell s kitchen manhattan new york city it was designed by architect james ingo freed of pei cobb freed partners the space frame structure was begun in 1980 finished in 1986 and named for united states senator jacob javits. From new state of the art meeting room spaces to a rooftop pavilion overlooking the hudson river we re redefining the way people share ideas unveil innovations and celebrate their work. The javits center is now offering green roof tours to customers interested in taking advantage of experiencing the exciting new ecosystem on manhattan s west side. The javits center s state of the art nearly 7 acre green roof can absorb up to seven million gallons of storm water run off annually while reducing heat gain throughout the building.

Since 2014 26 bird species and five bat species have been identified on the 6 75 acre green roof the second largest of its kind in the united states. There will also be vegetables cucumbers tomatoes peppers herbs carrots arugula and mesclun greens. A company called brooklyn grange will manage the garden. The planting provided in the garden gives a screening for anyone that wants to sit and hangout on the lawn space of the garden.

As a result of all of our sustainable initiatives the facility s annual energy consumption has been reduced by 26. On the roof garden there is walkable skylights that provide natural lighting to the interior of the event center.

The largest at ford motor company s river rouge plant which reached the milestone of its tenth anniversary in 2013 is also a xeroflor installation. This design is inspired by multi use rather than just another event center building. The javits center farm will have the city s only rooftop orchard with apples pears peaches and maybe cherries some grown in a 3 200 square foot greenhouse.
